Zhihu is China's biggest question-and-answer community, often compared to Quora, where users post questions and write long-form answers that others upvote, comment on and follow. Its hot list, rebang, ranks the questions attracting the most attention at any given moment, which makes it a window into what China's urban, college-educated internet users are curious or anxious about.
The list updates in near real time. Zhihu describes its heat score as a composite of recent activity around a question: new answers, upvotes, comments, new followers and reading volume, weighted so that fresh engagement counts more than old. A question's heat can jump when a well-known writer answers or when news media pick the topic up, and it decays as attention moves on. Scores typically run into the millions for the day's top questions.
Because the list is built from questions, it reads differently from a search ranking: entries are phrased as things people want explained, from breaking news to workplace dilemmas. Zhihu also interleaves some sponsored and editorial picks, and moderates sensitive topics. We fetch the public hot list once a day and translate the top questions into English, adding context where the backstory is not obvious.
