Weibo is China's largest microblogging platform, where hundreds of millions of users share short posts, photos and videos. Its hot search list, resou in Chinese, is the closest thing the country has to a national conversation tracker: a ranked feed of the keywords and hashtags people are searching for and talking about right now.
The ranking is recalculated continuously, roughly every few minutes. Weibo says the score behind it combines search volume, the number of posts and interactions a topic generates, and how quickly that activity is accelerating, which is why a breaking story can climb the list within minutes. Each entry carries a heat index, a composite number that runs into the tens of millions for the day's biggest stories, plus momentum labels such as new, hot or exploding that describe how fast a topic is rising rather than its absolute size.
Two caveats matter when reading the list. Entries marked as recommended are paid placements, not organic trends. And because Weibo moderates what may trend, the list reflects what is allowed to trend as much as what people actually discuss. We fetch the public list once a day, translate the top entries into English, and add context where a name or meme needs explaining.
