Our mission
Every day, hundreds of millions of people in China search, watch, buy, and debate things the rest of the world hears about weeks later, if ever. We think a curious reader anywhere should be able to keep up: the apps everyone is downloading, the snacks going viral, the gadgets selling out, the slang on every timeline. We find those stories, explain them with the context a newcomer needs, and point you to the cultural roots and products worth knowing.

Hong founded UnboxChina to decode China's fast-moving digital sphere for an international readership. Bringing an insider's fluency in Chinese social media, consumer tech, and cultural subcultures, Hong directs our editorial standards, personally pens investigative Decodes, and manages the daily veto review window. Hong actively monitors the automated pipeline to guarantee that speed and scale never compromise factual accuracy, voice, or cultural nuance.
How we work
Our pipeline monitors public hot lists across the Chinese internet—Weibo, Zhihu, Bilibili, and Douyin—around the clock. AI handles the heavy lifting of real-time trend detection, multilingual translation, and initial fact extraction.
However, algorithmic intelligence is never left on autopilot. Under the editorial stewardship of HONG XU, our editorial team contextualizes raw translations with historical background, filters out noise, and maintains strict human oversight over what gets published.
AI policy & human veto window
We operate on an editor-led veto system, not an unvetted pipeline. Stories with a machine confidence score of 0.85 or higher are scheduled for our daily 8:00pm Beijing batch, giving our editorial team a mandatory review window to inspect, modify, or veto any piece before it reaches readers. Anything below 0.85—or any topic touching nuanced or sensitive matter—is locked in quarantine until a human editor personally edits and approves it.
Auto-published never means unreviewed. HONG XU and the editorial team hold unilateral authority to pull or revise any published article. Furthermore, we run weekly deterministic sampling audits on published stories to evaluate machine judgment against human editorial standards. If a story fails human scrutiny, it is immediately corrected or taken down.
Our trust principles
- Source transparency. Every story names and links the original Chinese source it is based on.
- Honest uncertainty. Claims we cannot cross-verify are labeled "unverified" or removed.
- Corrections. Spot a mistake? Use the "Report an error" link on any article or email hello@unboxchina.com. We append a correction note to the story once fixed.
- Clear disclosures. Any article containing purchase links carries an affiliate disclosure.
- Political neutrality. We cover consumer trends, tech, and daily life. We do not take political positions.
