The idea struck a nerve with young Chinese facing expensive housing, long hours, and uncertain returns on effort. Official media criticized it as unvirtuous while youth culture embraced it with humor, spawning related memes about quitting, downshifting, and becoming a full-time child at home. In practice, few fully lie flat; the term functions more as a pressure valve and a bargaining position against hustle culture.
Tang ping echoes globally: it resembles quiet quitting and Japan's low-desire generation, and it is one of the most-cited Chinese social concepts in foreign media this decade.
