Wanghong (internet celebrities)
网红
Internet-famous people, places, or products in China: the influencer class and the influencer-economy infrastructure that turns online fame into sales.
Wanghong, internet red, means internet-famous, applied to people, snack shops, city districts, even bridges. As people, wanghong are China's influencers, and the term carries an economic meaning: fame deliberately converted into sales through livestreams, sponsorships, and their own brands.
The industry around wanghong is unusually industrialized. MCN agencies scout, train, and manage creators at scale; livestream incubators resemble factories with rows of streaming booths; and entire e-commerce supply chains exist to give a rising wanghong a product line within weeks. The archetype is Li Ziqi, whose pastoral cooking videos built a global following, or the sales kings of livestream commerce.
Wanghong also modifies places: a wanghong city like Chongqing or a wanghong shop is one made famous by short video, triggering tourist pilgrimages. City governments now court this status deliberately, making wanghong a unit of modern Chinese tourism economics.
