The traditional Chinese calendar's 24 seasonal markers, from Start of Spring to Major Cold, which still anchor food customs, farming, and cultural events, and are UNESCO-listed heritage.
The 24 solar terms divide the year into fortnight-long periods tied to the sun's position: Qingming (Pure Brightness), Grain Rain, Start of Autumn, Winter Solstice, and so on. Codified over two thousand years ago to guide farming, they remain a living calendar of seasonal life in China.
Their modern relevance is cultural. Specific foods attach to specific terms: spring pancakes at Start of Spring, dumplings at Winter Solstice, qingtuan green rice balls around Qingming, which is also the tomb-sweeping festival. Weather lore, tea harvests, and health advice all reference the terms, and media outlets mark each one with explainers and posters, including a famous countdown at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
UNESCO inscribed the solar terms as intangible cultural heritage in 2016. For trend-watchers, the terms are a recurring content rhythm: food brands, museums, and tea companies all launch term-themed products on schedule.
