Kuaishou

快手

China's second major short-video app, known for its strong communities in smaller cities and rural areas and its livestream-driven economy.

Kuaishou began in 2011 as a GIF tool and became Douyin's main rival in short video. Where Douyin feels polished and urban, Kuaishou built its identity on ordinary people documenting daily life: farmers, truck drivers, factory workers, and small-town shopkeepers. Its community slang, laotie, roughly means trusted buddy.

That down-to-earth base made Kuaishou a powerhouse in livestreaming and livestream commerce, especially strong in China's lower-tier cities and northern provinces. Hosts build unusually loyal fan relationships, and the trust translates directly into sales.

Kuaishou matters for trend-watching because it surfaces a different China than the Shanghai-and-Shenzhen bubble: rural food trends, county-level consumption, and products aimed at the hundreds of millions of people outside the big coastal cities.
