China 101 Glossary

ByteDance's Chinese version of the short-video app known internationally as TikTok, run as a separate product with its own content and e-commerce ecosystem.

Douyin is ByteDance's short-video app for mainland China. It shares its core design with TikTok, but the two are separate products: different apps, different content pools, different companies operating them, and no shared accounts. Douyin launched in 2016 and reports daily active users in the hundreds of millions.

Inside China, Douyin is much more than entertainment. It is a search engine for young people, a news feed, a marketing channel, and a full e-commerce platform with livestream selling and local services like restaurant vouchers and hotel deals. Its algorithm famously spots micro-trends within hours, which is why so many Chinese viral products trace back to a Douyin video.

For UnboxChina's coverage, Douyin is a primary source of consumer and lifestyle trends. Note that trends on Douyin do not automatically map to TikTok trends abroad, though Chinese hits increasingly leak outward.
