The Chinese internet's word for memes: viral jokes, catchphrases, and references that cycle through social media at high speed and act as cultural shorthand.
Geng originally meant a comedic bit or punchline; internet usage expanded it to cover memes of every kind: viral phrases, reaction formats, absurd jokes, and references everyone is expected to recognize. Playing along is called wan geng, playing the meme.
Chinese meme culture moves fast and is intensely self-referential. A celebrity slip of the tongue, a sports moment, or a news clip can spawn a national catchphrase within a day, live on bullet comments and sticker packs for weeks, and then date anyone who still uses it. Brands chase memes for relevance at real risk of cringe, while official media increasingly deploys memes to reach young audiences.
For foreign observers, geng are both a barrier and a key: Chinese social media can seem impenetrable because so much meaning is compressed into shared references, but each trending geng is also a precise snapshot of what the country is feeling right now.
