Pinduoduo

拼多多

The price-first e-commerce platform that rose on group buying and farm-direct goods to challenge Alibaba and JD, and the parent of the international app Temu.

Pinduoduo, founded in 2015, cracked China's e-commerce duopoly by betting on two things others ignored: price-sensitive shoppers in smaller cities, and social group buying where friends team up for lower prices. Its viral growth through WeChat sharing made it one of the fastest companies ever to reach hundreds of millions of users.

The platform's identity is extreme value: factory-direct goods, agricultural produce shipped straight from farms, and heavy subsidies on brand items through its 10-billion-yuan subsidy program. Critics early on mocked it for cheap goods and copycats; it answered by becoming the default channel for selling China's farm output and by attracting official brand stores.

Its international sibling Temu exported the same playbook abroad with enormous success. Inside China, Pinduoduo's rise forced Alibaba and JD to refocus on low prices, reshaping the entire industry's strategy.
