Milk tea (bubble tea)

奶茶

Tea with milk and toppings like tapioca pearls, the everyday treat drink of young China and the foundation of a powerful chain-store industry now expanding globally.

Naicha, milk tea, covers everything from classic Hong Kong-style milk tea to the cheese-foam fruit teas and brown sugar pearl drinks of the new-style tea wave. If tea drinks are an industry, milk tea is its mainstream: the default small luxury of students and office workers, ordered via app and delivered in sealed cups with fat straws.

The business story is formidable. Chinese chains perfected franchising, supply chains for fresh fruit, and relentless seasonal launches, then took the model abroad: Mixue's red signs crowd Southeast Asian streets, and premium brands like HEYTEA have opened in Western cities. Milk tea collaborations with games, museums, and cartoons are a standard youth-marketing playbook.

Ordering milk tea is also social currency in China: treating colleagues to a round is office ritual, and the first milk tea of autumn became an annual internet festival.
